Langley Park Project

The Pedestrian Project

The Latin American Studies Center, the Police Department and the Latino Student Association of the University of Maryland in coordination with the Maryland Highway Administration, and the Prince George Highway Safety Office launched a Pedestrian Safety Campaign “Use the Cross-Walk, Save Your Life.”

The goal was to increase awareness of pedestrian safety precautions among residents of neighborhoods with large Latino populations. UMD students visited elementary and middle schools to teach kids the importance of pedestrian safety.

The Latino students from the Latino Student Union (LSU), Enlaces Latino Americanos (ELA), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), and the Hispanic Heritage Coalition (HHC) targeted the Latino neighborhoods by posting and handing out information in businesses, corner shops, restaurants, hair salons, and other business serving the Latino community. Other targets of the campaign were Langley Park, Edmonston, Hyattsville, Greenbelt, Wheaton and Gaithersburg in Maryland.
