The Latin American Studies Center (LASC) is committed to supporting campus programming that encourages University of Maryland students to explore and expand their knowledge of Latin America and Latin American peoples. LASC is therefore pleased to announce a competition for grants for campus events that involve our undergraduate student population. Proposals from individual undergraduate students and student organizations are not currently being accepted this academic year but may be accepted in the future. Stay tuned for updates.
This grant competition will support events that promote knowledge of Latin America and Latin American peoples, broadly conceived. Events eligible for support include art exhibits, film screenings, guest lectures, mini-conferences, musical performances, panel discussions, poetry readings, workshops, Maryland day and community events. Proposed events must be held on or near the University of Maryland campus anytime during the spring 2010 semester. Admission must be open to the general student population and free-of-charge. Finally, proposed events must involve University of Maryland undergraduate students in a substantive way. Student involvement has been defined broadly to include student engaged in event planning, participation, performance, and/or audience attendance.
The maximum award will be $750. Award monies may be used for expenses directly related to the proposed event including advertising, catering, room and equipment rental fees, and travel expenses and honoraria for invited guests. Applicants should seek cosponsors in other campus units.
This grant competition will not support operating expenses for ongoing programs, research, publication, and events in which an admission fee will be charged. Event organizers are not eligible to receive honoraria.
The cover page should include the applicant's name and contact information (including email), an event title, and a one-paragraph summary of the proposed event.
The narrative section should: a) describe the relevant credentials of the event organizers and proposed guests, if any; b) describe the ways in which the event will enhance and promote campus knowledge of Latin America and Latin American peoples; c) indicate how the event will involve the student community at the University of Maryland; and, d) indicate proposed dates, times, and venues. The narrative section should not exceed 500 words.
A simple budget should be appended to the narrative. Co-sponsorship should be indicated and documented with an e-mail or letter from the supporting unit. Student applicants who are not able to secure co-sponsorship should submit evidence of their attempts to obtain additional funding.
Student applicants should provide the name of faculty or staff willing to serve as event supervisor.
